The Guiding Hands at Medix School

By Mike Sergeant2

Working in the admissions department with Medix School is a truly rewarding career. When conducting interviews with potential students to determine if we have a program that may work for them, I get to share in their excitement about the future.

In today’s economy, where many individuals and families are dealing with a lack of job security or even downsizing, re-training offers the chance of a new career and in many instances, more fulfillment.

Each day I meet with people from various backgrounds. Some are just out of high school and are looking to enter their first career. Others however, have come from an entirely different work background and are seeking more job satisfaction and security.

At Medix School we not only look for those individuals who have the qualifications for acceptance, but also individuals who demonstrate a desire to succeed in a chosen health care field. In the current job market, it is becoming increasingly important to have both ability and attitude – this combination can make all the difference when looking for that new career.

Through the process of admissions, we discover what a person has done, the skills they have gained and what health care career path they are looking for. In addition to the research a person does on their own, we help to ensure that the program matches their goals.

Programs at Medix School are practical and intense. Through speaking with people, we are starting to hear more and more that folks today are seeking hands on training that results in the attainment of viable, measureable skills.

“In the current job market, it is becoming increasingly important to have both ability and attitude – this combination can make all the difference when looking for that new career.”

When someone comes in to Medix for the first time, admissions is their first point of contact with the school. We are here to guide them throughout the process, answer questions and let them know about the various resources available to help them along every step of the way.

A person will make few decisions in their lifetime that will have more impact on their lifestyle than the decision to enhance skills. The health care field offers someone with a desire to help others the opportunity to enter a career with growth potential, and where they can make a difference in people’s lives.

Medix School: Massage Therapy a Great Career Choice

The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the body’s soft tissues and joints, as well as the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain. Medix School is proud to offer the Massage Therapy program. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills they need to acquire in order to provide a professional service to the demand of a growing population. People are always looking to find ways to reduce stress levels and lead a more balanced lifestyle – and massage therapy can help fulfill those needs.

One of the many benefits of the Massage Therapy program at Medix School is how the curriculum is set up. Blake Neibert, Program Coordinator for Massage Therapy explains, “The Medix School Massage Therapy curriculum is set up in a modular fashion. This is to say, that students learn material region by region. The main benefit of this approach is that students learn about anatomy, physiology, pathology and treatment of a given area in a logical coherent fashion. This approach allows students to organize student material well in their mind, thus making for easier retrieval of this information. This approach enables a student to challenge the Canadian Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) certification exam with confidence.”

“We are here to guide them throughout the process, answer questions and let them know about the various resources available to help them along every step of the way.”

Medix School also offers smaller class sizes for a better learning environment. “Smaller class size means more one-on-one time with the instructor. Simply, this means that students receive more feedback, facilitating their learning process,” says Neibert.

Medix School looks for individuals with a sincere and practical commitment to care for all types of people and to serve others with dignity. Each student will learn to balance the nurturing aspect of this profession, along with the understanding of proper techniques to practice massage therapy in the community.
Neibert offers some helpful advice about pursuing this profession as a career. “Becoming a massage therapist is a challenging process. It demands physical, mental and emotional aspects from a student. An individual who is considering becoming a massage therapist needs to evaluate themselves closely to determine if the program is right for them.”

Massage Therapy instructor Ken Edmondson is currently enjoying his fourth year as an instructor, with an emphasis in the sciences and massage practical, such as hydrotherapy and treatments. Edmondson says that students have a great opportunity out there for employment. “Individuals who successfully complete the certification exam, have opportunity for virtually all health career settings including cardiac care, nursing homes and hospitals. Employment can be either independent, contract or permanent positions. Massage therapists often are involved in amateur and professional sporting and non sporting events,” states Edmonson.

Medix School runs morning, afternoon and evening classes for this program. There is an exciting new addition that is being built right now, which will allow for a massage therapy public clinic for the community. Medix massage therapy students will be able to apply their skill set in a clinical setting and provide a service to the greater Kitchener/Waterloo region.
